At EV Works, we recently wrapped up a unique and challenging project: reviving a Corbin Sparrow. This quirky, single-passenger electric vehicle arrived at our shop with a significant issue—its motor was blown, and the brushes had completely melted. The car had also undergone some previous modifications, including a battery upgrade to Nissan Leaf cells. With these factors in play, our team knew this was going to be no ordinary project.
The Story Behind the Corbin Sparrow
For those unfamiliar, the Corbin Sparrow is a true oddity in the automotive world. Originally designed and produced by Corbin Motors in the late 1990s, the Sparrow was aimed at urban commuters looking for a small, efficient, and electric-powered way to get around. Its most distinctive feature is its three-wheel design and narrow, egg-like shape, making it ideal for navigating tight city streets. Production was limited, and Corbin Motors ceased operations in the early 2000s, leaving only a few hundred Sparrows on the road. Over the years, the vehicle has developed a enthusiastic following among EV fans and collectors.
Challenges and Solutions
Working on a vehicle as rare as the Corbin Sparrow presents its own set of challenges. Sourcing a replacement motor wasn’t straightforward, as the original parts are no longer manufactured. We had to sleuth out a compatible option and make the necessary adjustments to fit it into the Sparrow's unique layout. Additionally, the previous modifications added another layer of complexity, requiring us to work around the non-original Nissan Leaf cells and configure the system for optimal performance.
Our team’s experience with obscure and classic EV projects played a crucial role in getting this little car back on the road. After acquiring the right motor and addressing the root cause of the failure, we were able to breathe new life into the Sparrow.
This project wasn’t just about repairing a broken vehicle; it was about preserving a piece of electric vehicle history. The Corbin Sparrow stands as a reminder of the early days of EV development and the creative solutions that pioneers brought to the table. Now, this particular Sparrow is ready to continue its journey as a piece of living history, with a modern twist.
Driving the Corbin Sparrow is an experience like no other. Its lightweight design and nimble handling make it incredibly fun to zip around town, with quick acceleration and responsive braking that inspire confidence. And let’s not forget the reactions it gets—this quirky EV is a certified head-turner, drawing smiles, waves, and curiosity wherever it goes. The Sparrow isn’t just a mode of transportation; it’s a conversation starter and a celebration of electric innovation. Taking it for a spin reminds us why we love working on vehicles that are as unique as their owners.
