Joule - 1969 VW Bus Westfalia

Electrifying the Past: The Story of Joule, Our 1969 VW Bus Westfalia Conversion

Vintage vehicles hold a special place in the hearts of car enthusiasts. They remind us of simpler times, evoke a sense of adventure, and often become symbols of freedom. For our team at EV Works, they also present a canvas to merge nostalgia with sustainability. One of our favorite creations, Joule, is the perfect embodiment of this vision. Let us take you behind the scenes of transforming a classic 1969 Volkswagen Westfalia into an efficient, eco-friendly electric vehicle (EV).

The Vision Behind Joule

When we first acquired Joule, we imagined it as more than just a project—it was an opportunity to showcase what’s possible with an EV conversion. We wanted to preserve the iconic charm of the VW Bus while creating a practical and reliable vehicle for everyday use. The idea was simple: build an around-town cruiser on a budget, using proven technology and thoughtful engineering. Joule became a vital part of our community, helping establish an electric delivery service for Town and Country Market on Bainbridge Island. It’s since retired from deliveries, but its legacy lives on in our fleet of converted electric ProMaster vans.

Building the Future Into a Classic

The conversion process began with careful planning. Our goal was to maximize range and reliability while staying true to the Bus’s original character. Here’s what went into bringing Joule to life:

Motor: An AC51 motor provides 80 horsepower, delivering smooth and quiet performance that’s a world apart from the original internal combustion engine.

Battery: Joule is powered by 31.8 kWh of Tesla cells, giving it a practical range of 80+ miles per charge—perfect for local errands and leisurely drives.

Chassis and Components: We integrated modern electric systems while retaining the iconic look and feel of the VW Bus. The updated drivetrain offers a seamless driving experience, blending vintage charm with modern convenience.

Why the VW Bus?

The Volkswagen Bus, affectionately known as the “Type 2,” has a storied history that began in 1950. Designed as a practical workhorse, it quickly became a cultural icon, embodying the free-spirited ethos of the 1960s and 70s. Westfalia models like Joule added camper-style amenities, making them beloved by adventurers worldwide. By converting such a classic to electric, we’re not just preserving history—we’re writing a new chapter.

Why Joule Stands Out

Joule isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a testament to the craftsmanship and care we pour into our conversions. Its ability to deliver groceries quietly and efficiently earned it a reputation for reliability. Today, Joule serves as a showcase for what’s possible when vintage design meets cutting-edge technology. Whether it’s the smooth acceleration, the low environmental impact, or the sheer joy of driving a piece of history, Joule captures hearts wherever it goes.
